Why gameplay matters

In 2019, Jason had the distinct honor of directing the NBA 2K20: "Next is Now" Gameplay Reveal Trailer. With this responsibility, Jason led a team of 5 incredibly talented capture artists in creating what is still the most viewed NBA 2K trailer of all time. Through many cups of coffee and light nights the team pulled off a unique and epic gameplay trailer.

But, why does it matter?

In the gaming industry, the first look at gameplay can make or break the success of the game in terms or reception as well as sales. The game's mechanics and animations need to work well and it's why gameplay matters so much, it's always high stakes. Luckily, the NBA 2K20 trailer knocked it out of the park.

The NBA players represented in the NBA 2K20 "Next is Now" trailer are larger than life. Hall of famers, MVPs, All-Stars, championship winners, and all of them athletes that are changing the way the game is played. As a result, expressing the presence and persona of each individual athlete in the trailer was a goal of Jason's.

Jason focused on working with capture to set up shots that looked amazing when frozen in time. If the shot didn't exude presence, character, or power when paused it wasn't used.

Robo cam

Jason wanted to introduce a unique effect that hadn't been used in previous NBA 2K trailers, for this trailer it was the "robo-cam."

Popularized by Director Dave Meyers in Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE." music video, the robo-cam effect has been used in countless Hollywood films and music videos.

Jason thought this would be the perfect effect to show off the athleticism of the players, the versatility of the game, and the graphic quality of the latest installment of NBA 2K.

A huge part of what makes NBA athletes so skilled are the little movements that go unnoticed during the game. The precision in handling, foot placement, and positioning. When zoomed out, how you would normally see an NBA game, these movements and details are missed. In NBA 2K, you can zoom in as close as you want and witness the high level these athletes operate at as well as the incredibly fidelity that NBA 2K provides.

In the trailer, Jason sought to showcase new handling animations, dribble detail, as well as the subtle yet powerful presence an athlete when only standing on the court.
